VulgarWordUsage.db

The iOS VulgarWordUsage.db is a database found at private/var/mobile/library/Keyboard/. This database does exactly what the name implies: it logs vulgar word usage and displays what application the words were used in. It will also sometimes show the recipient of the word. It does not show what context the word was used in, it simply counts how many times the word has been used in a specific app. It also appears to log the word count separately based on the application it was used in.

I was curious what words would be logged by this database and what would be considered "vulgar." I wiped my iOS device and then armed myself with a modified list from CMU School of Computer Science's bad-words.txt.

The words I used were as follows:

I then sent those words through Snapchat and regular text message. I then pulled the VulgarWordUsage.db to see what words it logged. The database logged the following:

It was very surprising the amount of words that it did not log, especially those related to racial slurs. It also did not log "ass," but logged several variations of words containing the word "ass."

Out of the 948 different words I input, the VulgarWordUsage.db only logged 111 words.
